Rat snakes occur throughout Georgia and inhabit a wide range of wooded habitats including suburban areas. They frequent barns and abandoned buildings and are the most common snakes to enter houses. These snakes are important to us because they control rodent populations. Because they are excellent tree climbers, rat snakes also eat birds and eggs. Juvenile rat snakes eat lizards as well. Predators of rat snakes include raccoons, coyotes, weasels, birds of prey and even some other species of snakes. They are frequently killed by people who find them unwelcome in their homes.
