On the night of their emergence, nymphs usually leave their burrows after sunset to find a suitable spot on nearby vegetation to complete their final molt to adulthood. The new adults appear mostly white, but they darken as their skin hardens. It will be 4-6 days before they harden completely (longer if weather is cool). They then begin adult behavior after this period of maturation. View Adult Cicada Photo.
