Constructed in 1825 for John Walker on Mountain Road, once a major route between Richmond and the western Piedmont of Virginia, Walkerton served as a tavern in 1828 and 1829. Since that time it has been a hotel, store, voting precinct, and private dwelling. It is the largest brick 19th-century tavern still standing in Henrico County.

Walkerton is notable for a hinged, swinging, two-segment partition that was used to enlarge an upstairs room to accommodate guests. The building was restored in 1986 and Henrico County purchased it in 1995.

The main dwelling stands about fifty yards from the road in a spacious yard shaded by giant cedars, Osage orange trees, hollies, pin oaks. and tulip poplars. All outbuildings stand to the rear of the house in a large open yard rimmed by woods or tree lines.

Built by John Walker between 1824 and 1825, Walkerton Tavern is located at 2892 Mountain Road in Glen Allen. In the course of its history, the structure has served as a tavern, store, post office, voting precinct, and possibly a field hospital for wounded Union Cavalrymen in 1864.

Walkerton is a 22 acre tract containing one of the largest and best-preserved antebellum dwellings in central Virginia. Built in1825, it's a brick structure with 4 stories of living space. A number of architectural features distinguish it from other more modest public hostelries functioning in the region during the antebellum era. These include its double set of interior stairways (one for guests and one for family and servants), its unusual semi-enclosed gable-end service porch, and a unique swinging vertical-board partition that allowed one of the upstairs rooms to function as a temporary dance hall.

Small Hopkins Family Cemetery - Walkerton Tavern - Glen Allen, VA
Members of the Hopkins family lived at Walkerton from 1857 to 1941 and this is the family's cemetery. The strange thing is that each brick column marker had a different name on each side of it. We couldn't figure out how they actually buried the family members if the entire cemetery was enclosed as I believe Virginia law requires. I thought the use of this "pillars" with the planter pot on top was very creative and a beautiful idea.
