Communal Watering Trough for Horses - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
One of the main ways the disease was spread was through water troughs because the mucous could be passed from one horse to another along with the deadly virus. This trough was originally located on a street corner in downtown Lynchburg and later moved to Riverside Park, the trough was piped to receive constant gravity-fed water which filled and overflowed at one end.

Marble Column - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
This three piece marble column adorned the front of the First National Bank building at 10th and Main Streets. It was built 1908-09 with P. Thornton Marye as architect. When the building was completely remodeled in 1976-77, all marble was replaced by a brick facade.

Confederate Burial Section - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
This section is behind part of the original wall for the Cemetery's enclosure, which was built in sections beginning in 1827, and extended almost one mile in length. Most was demolished by the city as it deteriorated through the years. The 800-foot portion, still standing about 5 feet tall, was built in 1867-1868. There are antique rose varieties planted along the length of this wall. This burial section extends up to the part of the wall that was beside the Pest House Medical Museum in earlier photos.
