Horse-drawn Wagon - Hearse House & Caretaker's Museum - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
A simple horse-drawn wagon was used in this graveyard to transport coffins and work tools. Even after the City of Lynchburg employed a full-time superintendent of the cemetery in 1866, maintenance was often sporadic and equipment was very primitive.

African Burial Customs - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
The Old City Cemetery was the only burial ground in Lynchburg open to African Americans until 1885 and 75% of the estimated 20,000 people buried here, from 1806 to the present, are African-American. Before the end of the Civil War and Emancipation, virtually all of Lynchburg's enslaves adn free blacks were buried here in sections designated specifically for "colored" people. After 1865 the Cemetery's burials and gravemarkers reflected the increasing diversity of Lynchburg's African-American community. Tobacco factory laborers, porters, midwives, and laundresses were buried alongside college professors, politicians, ministers and many other black instiution-builders in the era of "separate but equal." Bottle Tree - African-American Tradition - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
Bottle trees outside the home protect the household from evil spirits and thieves. The bottles lure evil spirits and trap them inside. Dirt from the grave is often placed in the bottles. Dishes and jars are often broken to release their spirits and prevent the soul of the deceased from returning in search of them. Lamps and bonfires on the grave lead the soul of the deceased to glory. Seashells, especially white shells, represent the world of the dead, which is white and connected to the world of the living by water or the ocean.

Station House Museum - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
This Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Station was in use at Stapleton in Amherst County, Virginia, from 1898 until 1937. It's the only remaining C&O "standard station" of its size and style. In 1999-2001 the badly deteriorated station was dismantled board by board and reconstructed here to interpret the importance of railroads in the history of Lynchburg. Through employment, war, and accident, thousands of people buried in this cemetery lived and died by the railroad. The furnishing and instruments in the rooms are typical of World War I era.
