Old Wall Alongside of Cemetery Center - Old City Cemetery - Lynchburg, VA
Wondering about the gravestones propped on the wall. This historic brick wall is part of all that remains of the Cemetery's original enclosure, which was built in sections beginning in 1827, and extended almost one mile in length. Most was demolished by the city as it deteriorated through the years. The 800-foot portion, still standing about 5 feet tall, was built in 1867-1868. It devides the "old" antebellum graveyard from the "new" 20th century additions.
