Vietname War 1964-1973 - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
Lynchburg lost 27 men in Vietnam. The monument features a triangular obelisk with their names inscribed with an adjacent urn. The Vietnam Veterans of American, Chapter 196 erected the monument in 1986.

Purple Heart Medal - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
The origin of the Purple Heart Medal dates to the American Revolution. The medal in use today was established in 1932 and is given to those wounded or killed in time of war. It is estimated that 1.7 million medals have been given out since 1932. A time capsule was placed in the monument which was erected by the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 2008.

Lynchburg Museum in the background behind the Confederate Statue. This area became known as Court House Hill when the first courhouse was built there in 1813. The district contains a variety of architectural styles and notable churches, as well as the city's 1855 Old Court house, now the Lynchburg Museum.

Confederate Statue (Civil War 1861-1865) - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
The bronze sculpture shows a typical Confederate soldier with accoutrements and was cast by Von Mueller of Munich, Germany. This statue was dedicated in 1900 and has a time capsule embedded in its base that holds Confederate currency, replica flags, photographs of local veterans, and hair from Traveller (General Robert E. Lee's horse).

On the way up we saw this offshoot from the terrace levels and on the way back down wanted to visit. Some of the words on the marker are blocked by grass, but this is what is written: In 1986, twenty-two (22) years after Mr. Elder's death, the Blue Ridge Rose Society, in cooperation with the City of Lynchburg, undertook the revitilization the garden as a Biocentennial Project. The Garden now serves as a depository of old Lynchburg, Roses, all of which are known to have been grown and loved by the people of Lynchburg during its 200 year history.
