History of Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
Monument Terrace, completed in 1925, links Church Street with Court Street via 132 steps and 10 landings. This iconic image of Lynchburg links Courthouse Hill and the central business district below. It has evolved over the years to reach its present day appearance. Originally it was intended as a monument to the city's casualties of "the World War" of 1917-1918. The grand staircase, scrolls at the stair bases, and robust balusters pay homage to ancient Italian design.

World War I Monument at Base of Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
The bronze statue, The Listening Post, created by Charles Keck, commemorates Lynchburg's World War I dead and was installed in 1926 at the base of Monument Terrace. Inscribed in the wall behind the statue are local military unit designations and the names of 43 casualties.

Spanish American War - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
The next monument is for those who served in the armed forces during the Spanish-American War. This short war lasted only eight (8) months in 1898. The monument was erected in 1940 by the Craighill Camp, United Spanish-American War Veterans.

World War II 1941-1945 - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
This section features an inverted rifle with helmet, the symbolic image for the loss of a soldier. There are 182 names of Lynchburg men who lost their lives in the war inscribed on the wall here and another one behind me. This monument was erected by the Lynchburg Bicentennial Commission in 1986.

Korean War 1950-1953 - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
The Korean Conflict monument lists the names of the 24 Lynchburg residents who lost their lives. The monument was erected by Co. B, 5th Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, in 1986.

Prisoner of War-Missing In Action Monument - Monument Terrace - Lynchburg, VA
This monument pays tribute to those who are missing or were taken as prisoners of war while serving in the armed forces. From World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, and Desert Storm, over 83,000 Americans remain unaccounted for. The Dept. of Defense continues its efforts to bring closure to their fate. This monument was erected by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 196, in 2005. The path that is beyond it goes through Mr. Elder's Rose Garden (see later photos).
