Brookgreen Creek - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
From the time of the first Native Americans, the rivers and creeks have been important to the people living here. During the plantation era, swamps adjacent to the waterways were hand-cleared by enslaved Africans to create rice fields, which depended on these waterways for irrigation. During the 1850's, approximately 45,000 acres of rice field in Georgetown County produced almost half of the rice grown in the United States. In the 1930's, when Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington were creating Brookgreen Gardens, they used the waterways as a delivery route for sculpture brought by barge, then moved on land to a location in the gardens. The Huntingtons also owned a yacht, moored at a site used today by the creek excursion boat.
