A native of Georgia, Julian was a relative of the author Joel Chandler Harris. He studied architecture and had a teaching career at the GA Institute of Technology that paralleled his career in sculpture. Able to blend successfully his knowledge of the two disciplines, he created many sculptures for public buildings. Harris' skill in portraiture and bas-relief resulted in innovative medallic art designs that led to important comissions such as the inaugral medal for President Jimmy Carter.
