Lions, Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), Bronze, 1930 - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
The two handsome lions were first placed in 1930 at the entrance to The Hispanic Society of America in New York city, a museum founded by Archer Huntington. The bronze versions were replaced by duplicates carved in limestone and were brought here in 1932. Note that each lion protects its own part of the world as revealed on the globes between the lions' paws. Heroic versions of these lions are located at The Mariners' Museum, founded by the Huntingtons in Newport News, VA.

Circle of Life, Harold "Tuck" Langland (b. 1939), Bronze, 2001 - Using the metaphor of dance, this is one of a group of 4 figures, representing the cycles of human life, 4 seasons, 4 elements and 4 directions. Each figure has an accompanying poem written by the sculptor. This one: Dormancy - She is north that waits in darkness, She is winter when all is still, She is earth listening for spring rain.

Bella and the Bug, Louise Peterson (b. 1963), Bronze - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
Originally trained in classical ballet in Darlington, England, Louise did not begin to study sculpture until she moved to the United States in 1987. Originally her focus was on the human figure, but she found more success in the subject of Great Danes. This was inspired by observing her pet display a level of disturbed concentration for many minutes while inspecting a fly.

Don Quixote, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Aluminum, 1947 - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
The emaciated visionary, carrying a broken lance, rides a weary Rosinante, with head down and tail between his legs. Huntington conveys Don Quixote's endless quest, especially through his face. Beetlebrowed with deep-set eyes, he stares ahead.
The stables at Anna's home, Atalaya held not only Anna's riding horses; Old Stevie lived here as well. "An old hopeless stallion, starved and wretched," Anna bought him from a local farmer for $25 as a model for Rocinante, Don Quixote's emaciated steed. So weak that he could barely stand, she constructed a special sliing to support him. Under Anna's care his health improved considerably. After her model was finished she put him out to pasture.

Heron, Grouse and Loon, Elliot Offner (b. 1931), Bronze, 1992 - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
Offner is known for his sculptor's meticulous surface treatments and for compositions that launch his subjects into flight or emphasize points of tension and balance. The first casting of this was created in 1992 for a location in downtown Minneapolis. There, the birds are perched on granite boulders in a fountain, encircled by a seat wall. Here, they are displayed in an environment of gently flowing water surrounded by coastal plants.

William and Rachel Allston Developed the Plantation - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
Brookgreen first came into European hands in 1711 when it was granted to Robert Daniell. It was not until William Allston, Jr. purchased the property in 1764 that the plantation was aggressively developed, however; he made Brookgreen his home and it became the basis of his wealth. Allied firmly with the patriot cause during the American Revolution, Col. Allston served under Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, to whome he was related by marriage. Allston died in the summer of 1781, never to see his country independent or his last child born. In a twist of fate, six months later he was posthumously elected to serve in the State Legislature, a slap in the face of the local Tory population. His death left his wife Rachel to raise his six children and manage the plantation. She maintained an elegant lifestyle, as evidenced by the portrait shown. Three years after being widowed, she married Dr. H.C. Flagg, of Rhode Island, who had come to SC with the Continental Army. Responding to her family's objection that she was marrying a Northerner, she answered that she had married Allston to please the family and she now would marry Dr. Flagg to please herself. They lived happily at Brookgreen until 1800.

Washington Allston (1779-1843) - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
Perhaps the most famous of the Allston children was Washington, born in 1779 and named after the general. After his graduation from Harvard, he abandoned his SC homeland to embark on an artistic career. He studied in England with Benjamin West, and in Rome, where he was proclaimed the American Titian. Having enjoyed popular and critical acclaim abroad, he returned to America in 1818, but never achieved the same success at home.
