These magnificent old live oak trees (Quercus virginiana) were planted as early as the 18th century to mark the landside approach to the Brookgreen Plantation owner's house that then stood directly ahead on the location of the present Alligator Bender pool. 200 years later, the allee's grandeur was still such that the founders of Brookgreen Gardens made it the central feature of the butterfly-shaped garden that remains today as the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden. The great oak trees host two symbiotic epiphytes (plants that take their nourishment from the air rather than from the soil). Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) hangs gracefully from their branches, and resurrection fern (Polypodium polypodioides) growing on the trees' surface appears to come back to life with each rain.

Jaguar, Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), Bronze, 1907 - Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC 3-25-11
Among Anna's early sculpture successes was a series of jaguar studies done at the New York Zoological Society. The model, Senor Lopez, was a beautiful creature, legendary for his size and ferocity. Anna worked from memory of a split second scene when the animal began to move from an upper level down.
