Landscape of Area in 1880 - Piper-Cox House - Eno River State Park - Durham, NC
What did the landscape look like in the 1800s, when the Piper-Cox House was occupied, the land was farmed and the river dammed? Using historical records, personal accounts and field observations, a current satellite image was altered to show the area as it may have looked in 1880. Compare this to the satellite image of the Piper-Cox House and the surrounding Few's Ford Access of the state park in the next photo.

The Mill Works - Eno River State Park - Durham, NC
Mill operations begin with the turning of the waterwheel. Attached buckets or paddles catch moving water, causing the wheel to rotate. Power is transferred from the waterwheel to mill tasks by a series of gears and wheels. Advances in mill machinery produced metal lay shafts, like the one you can see behind the sign, which allowed for belt-operated equipment and increased efficiency.

Invasive Exotic Plants at Piper-Cox House - Eno River State Park - Durham, NC
As people migrate to new areas, they often bring their plants with them. An invasive exotic plant is a species that is growing outside of its native range and disrupting the natural plant community. They spread aggressively and lack control by predators or diseases. These 3 species were most likely planted for their ornamental value by inhabitants of the Piper-Cox House. They are now throughout this state park crowding out native plants that feed native wildlife.
