Front View of Flying Squirrel in Bluebird House - First One We've Seen Here Flying squirrels make their nests in tree cavities and rely on acorns and nuts as their main food sources. When acorns and other foods are plentiful, flying squirrels will cache them in locations throughout their home range for later eating in the winter. Occasionally, flying squirrels will also prey upon insects, bird eggs and carrion.
Sunlit Flying Squirrel in Bluebird House - First One We've Seen Here These flying squirrels usually nest in natural tree cavities or old woodpecker holes, 15-20 feet up a tree. These nests can hold either a single female or a maternal colony of several females and their young. Sometimes, flying squirrels will also build a summer leaf nest.
Closeup of Flying Squirrel in Bluebird House - First One We've Seen Here They mate twice a year having 3-4 young per litter. Nice to think of them populating our habitat. Though flying squirrels are more abundant than gray squirrels in some areas, they are rarely seen due to their nocturnal habits. Flying squirrels are also arboreal, meaning they spend much of their time in trees. When gliding between trees they use their tails as a rudder.
Flying Squirrel #2 in Another Bluebird Box Randal was ready to stop cleaning birdhouses when he did the second box with a second flying squirrel in it. This one was facing away and took a little bit to wake up. He was concerned about disturbing so many critters, but he continued on with the rest and didn't find any residents.
Flying Squirrel #2 Peeking From Entrance Hole in Another Bluebird Box When he woke up and saw me taking photos he figured he'd just go out the regular door, but peeking out there revealed Randal, who was bigger than the photo gal.
Peek-a-Book Closeup - Flying Squirrel #2 in Another Bluebird Box Cutest little face. You can see the scratch marks on the metal ring from its fine little nails. I would've loved to have reached in there and held him, but I thought about those nails and decided not to. Besides I don't like to make human contact so they keep their natural fear of man.
Side View of Flying Squirrel #2 in Another Bluebird Box Here you can see the unusual pattern on its body which I assume is part of the whole wing structure that helps him to fly. I thought they had longer tails since they're used as the directional rudder when they fly from tree to tree.
Flying Squirrel #2 in Another Bluebird Box With the black eye ring visible in this photo, I would assume this is a Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans). Notice the mouth is open a bit. He/she looks so precious with those huge black eyes.
Female Black-throated Blue Warbler This warbler was eating a poke berry and flew into the window only a foot from the branch. It was upside down when Randal saw it so he went out and sat her up in a protected area beneath the Poke Weed. She remained in shock for almost an hour and then flew off. The really odd thing is that the only other sighting of this bird we've had here was on the same day six years ago. It was a Male Black-throated Blue Warbler. What a contrast between male and female.
