Rear View of Pickerel Frog (Rana palustris) Near Edge of Pond These frogs are often identified as leopard frogs which is what I did the first time I saw one, but the pattern is definitely different. They can be seen moving across the forest floor. A favorite habitat is moist woods with cool streams. Pickerel frogs are toxic and are distasteful to numerous common amphibian consumers. During the winter, pickerel frogs hibernate in the mud of pond bottoms, or in ravines or springs under rocks and other debris.

Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymata species) Although considered a beneficial insect, beekeepers don't consider it so since they eat bees and wasps and even butterflies. It's like God put all kinds of left-over parts on this one. A head like a sea turtle and forelimbs like a praying mantis.
Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymata species) These beneficial bugs lay in wait on or near flowers ready to jump their unsuspecting prey, which may be several times their size. They also seize butterflies and wasps with their strong foreclaws before paralyzing them with their bite. Don't like that part.

First View of Flying Squirrel in Bluebird House - First One We've Seen Here Randal was doing the semi-annual cleanup of the birdhouses and opened this one up to find two big black eyes staring him down. Quite the shock since nothing has ever been in the boxes before. With built-in parachutes, in the form of wing-like flaps of skin stretching from leg to leg, flying squirrels glide among the trees feeding at night. Flying squirrels are the oldest living line of modern squirrels on the planet.
