Red-eyed Vireo in Garage 9-22-12 What a challenge to get it out, but I got to grab it and free its feet of all the spider webs it had picked up before it flew free. One of the most common birds of the Eastern forests, the Red-eyed Vireo is heard far more than it is seen. It sings continuously from the forest canopy from dawn to dusk. Its nests are often chosen by the Brown-headed Cowbird to lay its eggs which makes it very difficult for the vireo to raise its own young while feeding the cowbirds.
Squirrel Checking Even The Pots Out on Our Deck - Seen From Screened Porch I put dried mealworms in pots on the deck for the wrens and some of the squirrels have acquired a taste for them.
Growing Spring Peeper (Hyla crucifer) They are small (1.5 inches as an adult) and are given their species name by the cross on their back. Sometimes they are almost pink in color, but also change shades with the humidity.
Growing Spring Peeper (Hyla crucifer) Before I went for the camera, he had an Ailanthus Webworm Moth in his mouth. Looks like he found something else while I was inside. Hungry little fellow!
Green Mantidfly (Zeugomantispa minuta) Looks like a cross between a green lacewing and a praying mantid. They live throughout much of eastern United States and are found in a variety of habitats from late June through early October. They are considered beneficial since the larvae eats spider eggs and the adults capture and eat all kinds of small insects in captivity, but little is known of their food preferences in the wild. We love our spiders since they are bug-eaters, so not too crazy about that.
Green Mantidfly (Zeugomantispa minuta) She was laying eggs on the bottom of the square "globe" of our porch light. They are nocturnal creatures.
Pickerel Frog (Rana palustris) Near Edge of Pond Pickerel frogs spend most of their lives out of water, even during the breeding season. They only enter the water to avoid predation (from birds and snakes), to lay eggs, and to thermo-regulate (Dickerson 1906). This one was not at the pond, but as soon as he spied me, he jumped in that direction. Adult pickerel frogs feed on mostly on land where they eat a wide variety of invertebrate including: beetles, caterpillars, true bugs, ants, spiders, harvestmen, sowbugs, and mites.
